The Helen Russell Trio with Helen on Double Bass, Paul Hudson on Drums and Jamie Clark on guitar presented a lovely evening of laid back jazz.
There was a pleasant mix of instrumentals with Jamie taking the lead with his skilful jazz guitar and some vocals by Helen with her easy on the ear style.
The band played some less well known tunes including “Warbash”, “My one and only love” and “Way out west”, instrumentals with Jamie taking the lead on his guitar, with support from the talents of Helen’s Bass and Paul’s drums. Helen followed up with vocals on “Too late now” done in a nice Latin rhythm, “As long as I live”, a real swinger to entertain the small but appreciative audience.
In the second set Helen and Jamie performed an interesting instrumental duet called “Second sight” then Helen exercised her vocal folds on a couple of songs including Rogers and Hart’s “It never entered my mind” again choosing a Latin beat. A swing instrumental version of “Laura” followed. They ended the evening with John Lachlan’s “one night stand”.
Personally, I would like to have heard more of Helen’s voice but nevertheless it was an evening of excellent jazz from extremely competent artists.
