Swingset – 16/01/14

This very cool band, Andrew Fincher on guitar, Sarah Ashton on vocals, Lee Brackenborough on sax & piano, Costa Constantinou on bass, and Nathan MacGregor on drums, started the evening with a beautiful laid back rendition of “I didn’t know what time it was” followed by Porter’s “What is this thing called love”.

Sarah’s lovely voice was complimented by the quality musicianship of the instrumentalists. Things started to hot up with Jerome Kern’s “All the things you are”. This was followed by a set of original instrumentals. Andrew and Lee combined well for a piano, guitar rendition of “Round Midnight”. This was contrasted by the whole band returning for “Caravan” made famous by Duke Ellington, (composed by Juan Tizol).

On Sarah’s return, she sang the lovely Jobim “Dindi”. Then, I thought I knew just about every Cole Porter song but this swinging version of “I love you” was new to me! “Darn That Dream”‘ a personal favourite, was given a fab treatment by the trio of Andrew (guitar), Costa (Bass) and Nathan (Drums). More swing originals followed from this talented group.

Sarah rejoined the band to sing a Latin arrangement of a jazz standard composed by Isham Jones, lyrics by Marty Symes “There is no Greater Love”. She clarified that Billy Holiday’s bluesy “Fine and Mellow” opening words of “my man, he treats me mean etc” didn’t refer to her man on Bass, Costa.
The evening finished with the fab Fats Waller “Ain’t Misbehavin”. This was a splendid evening of a mix of standards with groovy arrangements and melodious originals performed well and enjoyed by the appreciative audience.   DC
