True professionals always make everything look so easy and that is certainly the case when the Sun City Stompers take the stage. Their laid back and happy chicago/dixieland style belies their high quality of musicianship and fills the dance floor for most of their numbers creating a vibrant and happy atmosphere.
Leader, multi-instrumentalist Paul Gibens on reeds, with Yvonne Anthony on piano, Derek Capewell on bass and Dan Simpson on drums, gives full reign to the talents of Warwick Denton on trumpet and Ivan Cocking on trombone. Ivan also featured his flugelbone, which looks like a large flugelhorn, and is a form of trombone used by marching bands (probably so that the guy in front doesn’t ‘get it in the neck’).
Although the attendance was only fifty or so it was good to see some new faces and a good proportion of young people in the crowd, especially too a number of swing dancers.
