Mike Ross Band 28 January 2011

………. had ’em dancin’ in the aisles………………..!

If ever we needed an entertaining band to lift our after-flood blues Mike Ross and his band were just the right choice. A fun-loving crowd of BJC ‘ex-patriots’ gathered at the Australian Legion Memorial Club to celebrate what Friday nights are all about.

Mike has been around the Brisbane jazz traps for a long time, best known as a drummer/vocalist. Years of sitting at the drums have given him spine problems, so more often these days you’ll see him up-front with a microphone in hand, quipping and singing away as if tomorrow didn’t matter at all.

Surrounding himself with some of the top players in the region helps to make the Mike Ross Band an enjoyable jazz experience too – Jo Bloomfield on piano, Derek Capewell – bass, Dave McCullum – drums . Mike Hawthorne – trombone, Mal Wood – trumpet and Paul Williams – sax, plus the glamour and talent of vocalist Cherryn Lomas – the leading light of the Andrews Sisters.

Mike’s strong voice and bouncy, extrovert personality comes over extremely well in his coverage of some of the great old Luis Prima favourites like Old Black Magic, Just a Gigolo and Jump ‘n Jive, withCherryn doing the Keely Smith parts. There’s not a lot of dancing room at the ALMC and the music was so danceable that ‘dancin’ in the aisles’ was absolutely it – and some of us did just that!

Thanks Mike for the kind of ‘pick me up’ tonic we all needed at this time, and we look forward to your next visit.
