Jef Neve with Andrew Shaw, Paul Hudson.
This was the most fantastic evening. A virtuoso performance, not only from the amazing Jef Neve on piano, but also Andrew Shaw on Bass and Paul Hudson on drums. You’d have thought that these guys had been playing together for years. The symmetry of instruments was brilliant. Many of the tunes were Jef’s original compositions so unknown to Andrew and Paul, and the cohesion of the players was fantastic and they’d only just met!
Jef set the scene using the first set to display his talent as a solo pianist. He enraptured the audience with his arrangements of Jonie Mitchell and the beautifully, haunting Billy Strayhorne composition ‘Lush Life ‘ (my particular favourite) together with original compositions. There were reminiscences of Gershwin in a couple of his compositions, which can never be bad. Jef really engaged with the audience, telling little stories about the background of his compositions.
Andrew and Paul joined Jeff for the second set of all original comps. Absolutely beautiful music. Even I was moved to buy Jef’s CD which does not disappoint as it contains a lot of what he played on the night including my favourite.
I can honestly say, I have never known BJC so quiet (apart from the rapturous applause and standing ovation). There were even some fellows sitting near the front trying desperately to cut their food without clanging the plates. You could hear a pin drop, the audience was so mesmerised.
A superb evening (and the piano had a broken string but you wouldn’t have noticed).
What a maestro!
