Saturday 18th of April saw a conglomeration of the closest thing we have to Brisbane Jazz Music Royalty, presenting a showcase of Burt Bacharach tunes – the evening appropriately called –‘Jazzarach’!
Pitch perfect vocals where presented by Irene Bartlett, Francesca De Valance, Rachel Head while the musicians were favourites, Dave Spicer on keys, Peter Walters on Bass and Lachlan Hawkins on drums. All of this illustrious group are of course lecturers at the Queensland Conservatory of Music in their respected fields with exception of Lachlan who recently graduated but more than held his own with this impressive line up.
As expected the vocal harmonies between these lovely ladies was impeccable and the audience were delighted with both solo and three-part harmonies. Personal favourites were Rachel’s rendition of “Trains, Boats and Planes”, Irene, accompanied by Viv Middleton on keys, with a moving “House is not a Home”, the a capella version (even Dave stepped away from the keys to provide harmonies) of “Close to You” which brought this exceptional evening to an end.
The highlight for me would have to be Francesca’s version, accompanying herself on piano, of a very passionate “Anyone Who Had A Heart”-goosebumps abound!
This performance was polished, professional and world class-Burt would be proud!
Look forward to having ‘ Jazzarach’ back!
