The Hot Jazz Alliance with Andy Schumm, from USA on cornet and piano, Michael McQuaid on clarinet and alto sax, Leigh Barker on bass, Josh Duffee, from USA on drums, Jason Downes on clarinet, John Scurry on guitar and banjo.
This superlative sextet transported us back to that Art Deco time when Jazz was king. They dazzled us with tunes, played superbly, from the roaring twenties. Michael took the role of Emcee for the band and was charming and funny, engaging with the audience. He and Jason played some brilliant clarinet duets channelling the likes of Benny Goodman and Artie Shaw. Andy not only played fab cornet but also brilliant piano in the wonderful style from the era of ‘bright young things’ when jazz was new.
All we needed was cups and saucers to drink the booze and we could have been in any Chicago speakeasy during prohibition.
“Some like it Hot” and the Hot Jazz Alliance certainly delivered. A very slick outfit and a great night.
