Let me begin at the end of the night….with one of the most enthusiastic and clamorous standing ovations that I have seen at the Brisbane Jazz Club.
Every member of our full house audience was on her/his feet, calling for an encore. They were smiling. They were clapping. They were whistling. And they were cheering. They stood as one, in a memorable expression of appreciation for an outstanding performance by the sublimely talented, LA-based songbird from Guatemala, María Gabriela Moreno Bonilla, akaGaby Moreno.
And long before our doors were closed, every one of the CD’s and vinyl albums that were on sale, had been snapped up and sold out.
All because, tonight, we had singer-songwriter Gaby, and her beautifully-played blue guitar, leading us through a set list of her own songs and the occasional cover. At times, it was love and tenderness. At times, it was get on your feet and dance!! It was blues, soul and R&B…and just a touch of Jazz. It was English, Spanish, French and Portuguese.
What a performer. What a performance.
Gaby’s exquisite, multi-toned and colourful vocal style was beautifully supported and complemented on stage by two very cool dude musicians. There was journeyman bass player, Kimon Kirk, who also provided sweet backing harmonies. And Sebastian Aymanns, a live-wire on the drum kit, with shakers attached to his arms and legs, helping to create and maintain a happy, dancing, Latin/Cuban feel for much of the evening.
Gaby’s set list included songs from her albums, Illustrated Songs, Postales and Illusion…and from a new album, which is due for release in May. The new album is an orchestral collaboration with Van Dyke Parks, whose arranging back catalogue includes The Beach Boys, U2 and Bonnie Raitt.
No surprises there, as Gaby’s own achievements include;
2006: Grand Prize in the Latin category of the John Lennon Song-writing Contest.
2010: Emmy Nominee for Outstanding Main Title Theme Music. Favourite American Latino Indie Artist at the American Latino Awards.
2012: Nominated for Record of the Year at the Latin Grammys.
2013: Won Best New Artist at the Latin Grammys.
2017: Nominated for Best Latin Pop Album at the Grammys.
We are blessed at the Brisbane Jazz Club…with a great riverside location…a captivatingly atmospheric interior vibe…and critically, an abundance of exceptional local talent; all of whom, we love to host, and who love to play here.
And occasionally we have the pleasure and privilege of hosting International visitors; special visitors such as tonight’s performers. Thank you Gaby, Kimon and Sebastian.
