Diamonds of Swing and their second sell out show at BJC played to a very receptive and enthusiastic audience.
Having known the Diamonds, Jan Lennard and Di Clark, for the past few years as stalwarts of Jazz Singers Jam Nights, it was very gratifying to see that they have now co-operated on producing a vibrant show to showcase their voices and stage personnas.
They gave this show a theme and a storyline which focussed on the progression of female jazz singers over the years, so their choice of songs was an important factor in the success of the show. Most of the songs, such as Goody Goody, Moonglow, God Bless the Child, Can’t Take That Away, Fever,
and How High the Moon are well-known standards associated with particular ‘jazz ladies’ – Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday and Peggy Lee come immediately to mind. Many of these famous singers started with big bands before forging their own successful solo careers.
The Diamond’s choice of backing musicians worked extremely well – Shane Calderbank – piano, Phil Jack – bass, Shane Purnell trumpet and flugel horn with subtle muted tones, reflecting the bygone era of Prohibition and Lachlan Hawkins – drums.
All in all Jan and Di presented an energetic, lively, entertaining and well thought out show. The Diamonds were really swinging.
