Yet another quiet night at the club due to G20 but those that did join us where treated to some fantastic music by the David Galea Quartet + 1. The band consisted of David on bass, Joe Marchisella – drums, Cleon Barraclough – piano, Sean Flynn – guitar and + 1 Simon Watson on vocals. Their choice of music was certainly not main stream but a blend of original contemporary jazz, modern standards and choice covers of artists such as Sting, Elbow, Radiohead, Nick Cave and more entertained us all night.
The band started with a song by Elbow called “The Bones of You” and then into one of my favourite tunes by Sting “It’s Probably Me”. They moved onto a Nick Cave tune, “Red Right Hand”, with a wonderful bass solo from David, one of many throughout the evening.
The second set kicked off with another tune by Sting “Consider Me Gone” from his brilliant album “The Dream of the Blue Turtles”. And the stylish, well-orchestrated tunes kept coming, finishing with an encore by Radiohead “Everything in its Right Place”. All the musicians are brilliant players, highlighted by the incredible voice of Simon Watson.
Everyone was featured throughout the evening including a drum solo by Joe showing why he is one of Brisbane’s most in demand drummers. Definitely not to be missed next time this entertaining Quartet + 1 come together.
