GIG Review – Dave Bentley Saturday August 31st
Dave Bentley chose the Brisbane Jazz Club to celebrate his 70th birthday on Saturday night and what a night it was.
He re-named the event as Dave Bentley & Friends but that couldn’t get away from the fact that more than 140 people, or at least most of them, had turned out to help him celebrate this milestone in his life. It wasn’t long into the set before his trio was joined on stage by a string quartet of lovely ladies including his daughter, Danielle.
This set the stage for some moving renditions, not the least being an original number written to espouse the sorrow when his daughter left home for her own place. The music jumped from reflective to jaunty as this master craftsman moved through tunes which had spanned his career.
Towards the end of the night, he was joined on stage by various artist friends brandishing guitars, harmonicas, washboards and didgeridoo. Jazz on a didgeridoo was something to behold. Sounds that would have rarely been heard before. So amazed were the patrons that the didgeridooist (is that a word?) received a standing ovation. A great night and one to remember which concluded with a resounding chorus of Happy Birthday from absolutely everyone on the premises.
Well done Dave Bentley, Happy Birthday, and may you continue to ply your wares for many years for you ardent fans. – Paul D
