John Hogan Quartet and Mezzo Bass

The Players:
John Hogan on guitar
Robert Harley (Dr Bob) on bass
Stephen Caurana on drums
Jake Bristow on piano
James McIntyre on guitar
Marian Skrede on vocal
It was a real treat for the good Thursday night crowd. The evening started with the John Hogan Quartet who played a lovely mix of laid back jazz tunes. John played beautiful melodies on his guitar that everyone enjoyed. He is a class act on those temperamental nylon strings. This set included classic 50’s Miles Davies (eg. Freddie Freeloader)…

Mike Frost and the Icemen Thurs 19 Feb ’15

Just for a change at the Brisbane Jazz Club we had an evening of good ‘ole blues (with some rock ‘n’ roll too) performed by Mike Frost and the Icemen, with Mike on guitar including a very cool slide, Mojo Web on Bass, Mark ‘The Colonel’ Doherty on a variety of harmonicas and David Burgess on drums.
Mike and the Colonel exercised their vocal folds to present lots of foot tapping 12bar Blues tunes that had the folks dancing, although it…

Sarah Collyer Quintet – 16th Dec 2014

Once again Sarah Collyer packed the Brisbane Jazz Club with devout followers!
It seems, that every show Sarah’s voice just becomes even smoother and more velvety.  Backed by John Reeves on keys, Sam McGuire on bass, Niyi on guitar and Steve Francis on drums it was a fantastic night of jazz music at its best.
Sarah’s vocals in my opinion, are carving her way to being one of Australia’s finest jazz performers.  Her originals hold their own against the great standards such as Summertime and classics…

Sarah Collyer Quintet – 16 May 2013.

Although I have known Sarah for some time, this was the first time I had really listened and appreciated her talents as a jazz singer.
Sarah sings the Blues…. could easily have been the title of this show, featuring our very own Sarah Collyer. A quiet Thursday night with a small audience perhaps contributed, if anything, to the beautifully laid-back and well thought out performance that Sarah had prepared. There is something profoundly Blue about Sarah’s style, and while her delivery does not have the…

Dr Bob Presents …23 March 2013

So, what can I say about last night other than it was a ‘Funking’ good night with 151 young patrons, finding the Club very much to their liking and vowing to return. With a style described as blues/soul/groove and funk, although I’m not quite sure how to define ‘funk’, Funky Miracle hit the stage, the flames were kindled and burst into flame on the 5th or 6th bar of the first number.    This is what the audience had come to hear.
Sunset Funk played all…

The Col Atkinson Quartet – Sunday 4 January, 2015

Seriously folks. When did the Brisbane Jazz Club have it any better than this?
For those that came out on this post-Christmas, New Work-Year’s Eve, the rewards were immense.
The virtuoso quartet comprised Van Morrison lookalike, Col Atkinson on electric bass and vocals, Galapagos Duckstalwarts, Willy Qua on saxes and flute and Will Sargisson on keys, with local drumming icon Paul Hudson at the kit.
Outstanding stage presence, technique, humour and a collaboration of lofty talents seamlessly combined to deliver a truly sublime performance…

Jo Bloomfield Quintet – Sunday 7 December 2014

Jo Bloomfield Quintet entertained guests to an evening of fantastic music with a mix of jazz standards and rocking swing and blues. The crowd loved it.
The first set opened with Lady Be Good moving onto Bei Mir Bist Du Schoen and It Had to Be You which got the crowd settled in for what was going to be a great night of entertainment. Other stand outs during the evening were It Don’t Mean a Thing with a drum solo from Pat, Si Tu Vois Ma…

Mojo Webb and Coogee Timms

What a dynamic duo these two were.  An absolutely amazing night of blues performed to a packed audience. The friendship and musical connection of Webb and Timms shone through the whole evening.  There was no warming up of the crowd necessary, as soon as Webb started to sing the crowd was hooked.  Both guys sang and played amazing guitar while Timms also added drums throughout the night.
Classic blues number by the greats and some not so well known numbers made…

Dave Bentley & Friends – 70th Birthday Partay

GIG Review – Dave Bentley Saturday August 31st
Dave Bentley chose the Brisbane Jazz Club to celebrate his 70th birthday on Saturday night and what a night it was.
He re-named the event as Dave Bentley & Friends but that couldn’t get away from the fact that more than 140 people, or at least most of them, had turned out to help him celebrate this milestone in his life. It wasn’t long into the set before his trio was joined on stage…
