Home Vale – Bob Mair – CSJB

bob mair” We are deeply saddened to advise of the passing of Bob Mair, drummer and leading light of Caxton Street Jazz Band. Bob lost his battle with cancer and passed away peacefully on Saturday morning”

On behalf of the Brisbane jazz community, and the Brisbane Jazz Club membership, we offer our sincere condolences to Bob’s wife Bernice, his family and fellow band members, his friends, and the many admirers of his work and leadership of the band which was originally formed in 1977.The devoted following of the band, under Bob’s direction, have filled the Brisbane Jazz Club almost every month for countless years to dance and dig the ‘Hot Jazz’ style of the 6-piece CSJB.Originally from Adelaide, Bob developed his passion for jazz and drumming as a teenager, and during his life at Adelaide University he was influenced by such jazz stars as Gene Krupa and Len Barnard.

Although he followed a career in IT, which took him to many other cities around Australia, his playing became a more regular and important part of his life when he eventually arrived in Brisbane in the 70s. Bob had the distinction of becoming the first percussionist in the Caxton Street Jazz Band as a drummer and washboard player.

Bob’s playing qualities were rewarded with invitations to join the Hot Gossip Jazz Band on a tour of Germany in 2000 and membership of Tony Asby’/Tich Bray Yerba Buena Jazz Band, which made two recordings.”
