John Hogan Quartet and Mezzo Bass

The Players:
John Hogan on guitar
Robert Harley (Dr Bob) on bass
Stephen Caurana on drums
Jake Bristow on piano
James McIntyre on guitar
Marian Skrede on vocal

It was a real treat for the good Thursday night crowd. The evening started with the John Hogan Quartet who played a lovely mix of laid back jazz tunes. John played beautiful melodies on his guitar that everyone enjoyed. He is a class act on those temperamental nylon strings. This set included classic 50’s Miles Davies (eg. Freddie Freeloader) and Coltrane tunes and other bee bop and Latin mixes. Also included was a fab jazz arrangement of Sting’s “Roxanne”.

Dr Bob returned for the band’s second incarnation as Mezzo Bass with the same rhythm section and James McIntyre on guitar.
They started the set with a great rendition of “spring is my joy”. They were joined by Marian Skrede on vocals who sang Jobim’s ever popular “Girl from Ipanema”, followed by “Tenderly” and a bluesy “Cry me a river”.
Marian’s interesting alto voice complimented Mezzo Bass’ style and their choice of American Song Book classic tunes. This was Marian’s first time out as lead at BJC and she did a creditable job. A very pleasant evening was had by all.
