Brisbane Vocal Jazz Festival – Sharny Russell, The Idea of North

There are not enough adjectives to describe the evening so I’ll just say WOW!
The evening opened with Sharny, just her fabulous voice and her brilliant piano playing. The audience was captivated by her musicality and there was not a sound in the packed house (hearing pin dropping comes to mind) She sang (with a little bit of Scat too) some classics and some of her compositions, a wonderful opening act. Later Sharny joined the Idea Of North for a few…

Enthusiastic Musician’s Orchestra – Thur 10 Dec 2015.

20-piece band,‘EMO’, the Enthusiastic Musicians Orchestra, are an enormously massive organisation and an exciting magical outfit of elite musical operatives.
Their superb big band sound, skillfully guided by Musical Director, Josh Hatcher, and rounded out by vocals from Kayleigh Pincott and Charlotte McLean, kept the BJC audience spellbound for the entire night.
‘EMO’ pride themselves on featuring original compositions by local musicians, and on this night they presented first-time material from new composers, as well as tunes from tried and true, regular…

Diamonds of Swing – Sat 23 Jan 2016

Diamonds of Swing and their second sell out show at BJC played to a very receptive and enthusiastic audience.
Having known the Diamonds, Jan Lennard and Di Clark, for the past few years as stalwarts of Jazz Singers Jam Nights, it was very gratifying to see that they have now co-operated on producing a vibrant show to showcase their voices and stage personnas.
They gave this show a theme and a storyline which focussed on the progression of female jazz singers over the years, so their…

Night By Night – Friday, February 5th 2016.

‘Well I ain’t got the heart to lose another fight. So until my ship comes in, I’ll live night by night’.  So sing Steely Dan in the song ‘Night By Night’, from their third studio album, ‘Pretzel Logic’.
And so sang ‘Night By Night’ to a jam-packed and very enthusiastic house at the Brisbane Jazz Club on Friday, February 5th 2016.
This energetic 10-piece, named after the song, brought Walter Becker and Donald Fagen’s complex arrangements and harmonies to life, in an…

Anna Maria Jopek (Poland) Sun 17 Jan 2016

Anna Maria Jopek’s music may be able to transcend language barriers, but the Polish singer wasn’t short of words to describe her surroundings at the Brisbane Jazz Club on Sunday night. “This is honestly the best view I’ve ever sung in front of,” she told the audience, as she turned to look through the windows at the rippling Brisbane River and the city beyond.

It’s not surprising Jopek noticed the backdrop. Her performance showcased songs with melodies carefully layered in front…

Tiffany Rae Quintet. Friday, Nov 20th, 2015

The band kicked off the first set as a smooth, smooth Trio, with David Fennell on piano, Andrew Shaw on double bass and Aaron Janz on drums. Tiffany soon stepped up to join them, and they were a Quartet.
Tiffany’s dress, sparkling like the sun and the surf of her Gold Coast home, was outsparkled only by her personality and smile. With an engaging presence at the mike, she and the band quickly established a warm connection with the audience, which…

Natalie De Jager – Thurs 20 August, 2015

The players
Natalie De Jager  – Vocals
Jeremy O’Connor – Bass
Sophie Min – Piano
Dan Smith – Drums
Rafael Karlen – Sax
Natalie opened the evening with a couple of her very catchy original compositions then charmed the audience with a fab arrangement of Billy Joel’s ‘New York State of Mind’ (quite appropriate as she is just off to the bright lights of New York for 3 months to record with Matt Baker). More really fab original compositions followed and these will be recorded in…

Wes Taylor Quintet Sunday 2 August 2015

Wes seems to have found the solution to ‘how to get a big sound from a small band’ by creating a quintet with Dale Rabic – well-known for his organ and keyboard skills, Dave Galea on bass, Steve Francis on drums, Wes himself on guitar and vocals and just to prove that it’s ‘in the genes’ his son Jacob on percussion. Jacob also played a few numbers on bass and Wes’s younger son Samuel demonstrated his prowess when featured with…

Maggie Britton Quartet BJC Sunday 26 July 2015

One of those legendary names in Australian entertainment Maggie Britton continues her long career from her base on the Gold Coast. In company with Will Sargisson on piano, Col Atkinson on bass guitar and Willy Qua on drums – three headline acts in their own right – Maggie made one of her occasional appearances at the BJC to a very appreciative audience.
Her repertoire of time-honoured songs such as Almost Like Being in Love, Fly me To the Moon, Shadow of…
