Tiffany Rae Quintet. Friday, Nov 20th, 2015

The band kicked off the first set as a smooth, smooth Trio, with David Fennell on piano, Andrew Shaw on double bass and Aaron Janz on drums. Tiffany soon stepped up to join them, and they were a Quartet.
Tiffany’s dress, sparkling like the sun and the surf of her Gold Coast home, was outsparkled only by her personality and smile. With an engaging presence at the mike, she and the band quickly established a warm connection with the audience, which…

Andrew Shaw Quintet – Thur 19 Nov 2015

On a sweltering Thursday night the smooth grooves of the Andrew Shaw Quintet were the only sure fire way to chill out. The band took the stage with an upbeat, Shakespeare-inspired tune called ‘Thrice The Brindled Cat Hath Mewed’. The title – a line from Macbeth – set the tone for the rest of the evening, with literary and musical references peppering both the set list and Shaw’s banter.
It wasn’t all intellectual, though. Two of the evening’s best songs were…

The Helen Russell Trio – Thurs 10 Sept 2015

The Helen Russell Trio with Helen on Double Bass, Paul Hudson on Drums and Jamie Clark on guitar presented a lovely evening of laid back jazz.
There was a pleasant mix of instrumentals with Jamie taking the lead with his skilful jazz guitar and some vocals by Helen with her easy on the ear style.
The band played some less well known tunes including “Warbash”, “My one and only love” and “Way out west”, instrumentals with Jamie taking the lead on his…

Devil’s Kiosk – Thur 8 Oct, 15

Are Thursday’s at BJC becoming blues nights? Devil’s Kiosk played to (yet again) a select Thursday night audience. It’s a shame that more people didn’t venture out as the quality of the band was high. Even visitors from St Louis commented on the calibre of the music. Those who did make the effort had a great time.
Jamie Symons is an amazing Harp player (just learned that ‘harp’ is short for Harmonica, I sort of expected an actual Harp, I am…

Natalie De Jager – Thurs 20 August, 2015

The players
Natalie De Jager  – Vocals
Jeremy O’Connor – Bass
Sophie Min – Piano
Dan Smith – Drums
Rafael Karlen – Sax
Natalie opened the evening with a couple of her very catchy original compositions then charmed the audience with a fab arrangement of Billy Joel’s ‘New York State of Mind’ (quite appropriate as she is just off to the bright lights of New York for 3 months to record with Matt Baker). More really fab original compositions followed and these will be recorded in…

Wes Taylor Quintet Sunday 2 August 2015

Wes seems to have found the solution to ‘how to get a big sound from a small band’ by creating a quintet with Dale Rabic – well-known for his organ and keyboard skills, Dave Galea on bass, Steve Francis on drums, Wes himself on guitar and vocals and just to prove that it’s ‘in the genes’ his son Jacob on percussion. Jacob also played a few numbers on bass and Wes’s younger son Samuel demonstrated his prowess when featured with…

Travis Jenkins Quartet Thursday 30 July 2015

Lauded as one of the currently hottest properties on the Brisbane jazz scene, guitarist Travis Jenkins produced a memorable show in his first headlining performance at BJC tonight.
In a recent Scenestra interview Steve Russell referred to Travis as ‘having been an outstanding student at JMI , graduating in 2013. He has a unique and raw approach, and the wits and chops to cope with my complicated composing.’
Although I have known Travis for a few months in his capacity as a…

Maggie Britton Quartet BJC Sunday 26 July 2015

One of those legendary names in Australian entertainment Maggie Britton continues her long career from her base on the Gold Coast. In company with Will Sargisson on piano, Col Atkinson on bass guitar and Willy Qua on drums – three headline acts in their own right – Maggie made one of her occasional appearances at the BJC to a very appreciative audience.
Her repertoire of time-honoured songs such as Almost Like Being in Love, Fly me To the Moon, Shadow of…

The Aaron West Band. Friday August 7th, 2015

At the start of the night, I asked the band if they were ready to go on. The reply was quick and smiling; ‘Go on? Dude, we are about to go OFF!!’
And that is exactly what they did, this band of great musicians; Aaron West on guitar and vocals, Will Sargisson on keys, Greg Lyon on bass and vocals, Dave Sanders on drums, Tony Buchanan, a guest from Melbourne, on tenor sax, and guest vocalist, Dean Gray.
This was a night…
